《月夜》- 杜甫

【Du Fu】- Moonlit Night

In Fuzhou tonight, the moon shines bright, In her chamber, she watches alone. Afar, I pity my young children, Too young to remember Chang'an.

Her cloud-like hair is damp with fragrant mist, Her jade arms cold in the clear moonlight. When shall we lean in the empty window, Together in brightness, and tears dried up?

《月夜》 作者:杜甫 今夜鄜州月,闺中只独看。 遥怜小儿女,未解忆长安。 香雾云鬟湿,清辉玉臂寒。 何时倚虚幌,双照泪痕干!

Line 1: The poem opens with a vivid image of the moon shining brightly over Fuzhou, a city in southern China. The phrase "今夜鄜州月,闺中只独看" (In Fuzhou tonight, the moon shines bright, in her chamber, she watches alone) sets the scene for the poet's solitary contemplation.

Line 2: The poet's thoughts turn to his wife and children, who are far away in Chang'an, the former capital of China. The phrase "遥怜小儿女,未解忆长安" (afar, I pity my young children, too young to remember Chang'an) conveys a sense of longing and concern for his family.

Line 3: The poet's imagination paints a picture of his wife, her hair dampened by the fragrant mist and her arms chilled by the moonlight. The phrase "香雾云鬟湿,清辉玉臂寒" (her cloud-like hair is damp with fragrant mist, her jade arms cold in the clear moonlight) creates a sensual and evocative image.

Line 4: The poet yearns for the day when he can be reunited with his family and share the beauty of the moonlit night together. The phrase "何时倚虚幌,双照泪痕干!" (when shall we lean in the empty window, together in brightness, and tears dried up?) expresses a poignant longing for home and family.

Overall, the poem "Moonlit Night" is a moving expression of the poet's love for his family and his longing for home. The imagery of the moon, the mist, and the moonlight creates a dreamlike atmosphere that underscores the poet's emotional state.
